Melhorn-Boe, Lise. Penelope's Apron. [North Bay, Canada]: Transformer Press, 1994.
A young girl tries her hand at creativity by making an apron from a tea towel, only to be spurned by her mother. This accordion book is created from handmade paper colored yellow like the tea towel, with pop ups in the shape of a aprons, and embellished with a red ribbon, just like the original creation.
Nettles, Bea. Hair Loss. Urbana, IL: Bea Nettles, 2007.
When Nettles was diagnosed with breast cancer, she decided to be proactive and shaved her head. The saved hair is now embedded in the endpapers to this work, which contains photographic self portraits for each month of her treatment.
Schapers, Veronika. Erbe. Poem by Kerstin Hensel. Tokyo: Veronika Schapers, 2006.
Beautifully printed (pale pink on white) paper with a delicate Japanese pattern and a (table) cloth embroidered with a poem are wrapped in a precious package. The enclosed items evoke a sense of "grandmother" for the artist (and many others); they are kept safe in the handmade paper wrapper that imitates the traditional "Tatoushi" used to protect folded kimonos. This carefully constructed package marries Eastern and Western traditions of preserving keepsakes. The poem "Inheritance" reminds us, through the metaphor of gift giving, about the circle of life.
